The share of young women in informal employment reaches 71% in Xochimilco.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Seven out of ten young women who don\u2019t participate in the labor market are exclusively engaged iin household and care work.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">In Mexico City, 27% of young women lack access to healthcare services.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-justify para-style-body\"><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Over the past three decades, one of the main advances for young women has been greater access to education. However, significant challenges persist, particularly for those who neither study nor participate in the labor market. In Mexico, one in four young women is in this situation, placing the country 77th out of 166, according to the World Bank. This reflects a loss of potential for<\/span> <span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">development and highlights the urgency of promoting policies that foster young women\u2019s economic inclusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-justify para-style-body\"><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">In this context, <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO), with the support of the Hilton Foundation, analyzed the socioeconomic conditions of young women in Mexico City. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">The objective is to deepen the understanding of their participation in the local economy and generate evidence to inform public and business policy at the city level. This research is particularly relevant in the context of the demographic bonus, as it highlights the opportunity to integrate more young women into formal employment and strengthen the productive population of an aging city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Mexico City is home to 1.05 million women aged 15 to 29, representing 22% of the women\u2019s population in the entity. <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"><strong>Of this group, 37% are studying, 35% are part of the workforce, and 15% combine both activities. A key indicator of this is informality<\/strong>,<\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> which reflects whether employment provides higher income, access to social security, and legal certainty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">In Xochimilco, <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">71% of young women work under informal conditions, compared with 33% in Cuajimalpa.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Job quality is closely linked to the economic sectors in which women are employed.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> In Xochimilco, most young women work in restaurants and retail, sectors with high levels of informality. This share varies across boroughs, <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">reaching 22% in Cuajimalpa, 24% in Tl\u00e1huac, and 30% in Iztapalapa and Tlalpan.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-justify para-style-body\"><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Insecurity limits economic participation<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Access to public transportation enables better job opportunities;<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> however, in the southern region of the city (La Magdalena Contreras, Coyoac\u00e1n, Benito Ju\u00e1rez, and Tlalpan), <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">27% of women stopped using it due to fear of becoming victims of a crime.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> This proportion declines slightly to 24% in the eastern region, which includes Iztapalapa, Milpa Alta, Tl\u00e1huac, and Xochimilco.}<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-justify para-style-body\"><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">The cost of caregiving also impacts young women<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">In Mexico City, <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">six out of ten young people who are neither studying nor working are women.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"><strong> This group represents 12% of young women<\/strong>, although the proportion rises to 22% in Milpa Alta, the borough with the highest prevalence.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Seven out of ten young women in Mexico City aged 15 to 29 who do not participate in the labor market are exclusively engaged in unpaid care work.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">On average, <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">young women who are neither studying nor participating in the labor market spend 58 hours per week on unpaid work,<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> compared with 36 hours among men. In contrast, among young people who both study and have paid employment, time spent on these activities is reduced by half for both women and men.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-justify para-style-body\"><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">As a result of the<\/span> <span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">gender gaps that persist in Mexico City, 35% of young women lack their own income, excluding those who are exclusively studying.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> This scenario underscores the opportunity to promote more sustainable and inclusive economic growth by creating for greater economic autonomy among young women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-84971\" src=\"https:\/\/imco.org.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-12-23-112038.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"956\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/imco.org.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-12-23-112038.png 956w, https:\/\/imco.org.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-12-23-112038-300x39.png 300w, https:\/\/imco.org.mx\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Captura-de-pantalla-2025-12-23-112038-768x99.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 956px) 100vw, 956px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">To raise women\u2019s economic participation in <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Mexico City from 55% to the OECD average of 67%, the city would need to incorporate 850,000 additional women into the labor market.<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> If this incorporation was accelerated, <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Mexico City\u2019s GDP could grow by 60 billion pesos over the next decade, <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">equivalent to a 1.4% increase. Young women are key to achievng this goal; therefore, IMCO proposes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Formal employment.<\/span> <\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Boroughs should implement progressive programs, such as training aligned with job openings and pathways to first employment, while <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"><strong>companies collaborate with youth networks<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">to facilitate connections to quality jobs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"cvGsUA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Care system. <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">The <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Head of Government,<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> in coordination with the boroughs, should slign policies and programs to address local care needs. In addition, the <\/span><strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\">Mexico City Congress<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"a_GcMg font-feature-liga-off font-feature-clig-off font-feature-calt-off text-decoration-none text-strikethrough-none\"> still needs to advance in legislation that guarantees the right to care.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Including more young women in education and the labor market would strenghthen Mexico\u2019s City economic and social development.
